Article Abstract:

UK Conservative party leader William Hague's response to the 1998 Queen's Speech will allow journalists to gain an insight into whether he is beginning to define a specific project. Hague would be well advised to avoid opposing simply for opposition's sake. He should focus on what will not be in the Queen's Speech that should have been in, and should adopt a radical stance. He should also consider demanding that the government legislates for the creation of a fully elected second chamber as a replacement for the House of Lords.

There's no setting for Hague's Tories at the nation's kitchen table

Article Abstract:

It is clear that the UK Conservative party will make every effort to regain power as soon as possible. However, at present the Conservatives do not seem to have a clear set of ideas on which to establish their revival. They could benefit from promising to manage the Third Way more effectively than Prime Minister Tony Blair and the rest of the Labour party, or they may choose to return to full-scale support of free-market economics. It remains unclear which approach Conservative party leader William Hague favours.
