Article Abstract:
There is a tendency for music companies to become larger, as reflected most recently in the purchase by Seagram of Polygram, the record and film division of Philips. However, smaller independent record labels are also seeing strong growth. Some of these labels have been able to sign up leading performers. A positive relationship seems to have emerged between smaller labels and the largest players, with the major labels outsourcing their development and promotion work to smaller labels. However, there are also elements of tension in this relationship.

The imprisonment of Marion 'Suge' Knight in Dec 1996 has created considerable difficulties for record label Death Row. The concern has sold 26 million records since it was founded by Knight and Andre Young in 1992, but is now facing serious legal and financial problems. It has nobody who is clearly in control, and is believed to be on the point of losing Snoop Doggy Dogg, its only remaining major star. Knight and others associated with Death Row are being investigated for alleged connections with money-laundering and drug trafficking.

Article Abstract:
A new generation of rap artists has emerged in the US, and rap music now accounts for around 15% of total music sales. Rap singles and albums have a dominant place in the music charts, and this trend is likely to be continued by albums due to be released shortly. Record label No Limit Records, which has sold more than 20 million albums, has been particularly successful. Rap now appeals mainly to suburban white teenagers, with white consumers purchasing two-thirds of all rap music in 1997.
