The voice from the crowd

Article Abstract:

Royal Opera House chorus director Terry Edwards is the first director to appreciate the singers. There have been 11 chorus masters in 17 years, using the post as a stepping-stone to opera. Too many costume fittings and acting calls interrupted rehearsals. Six performances a week of two or three operas and two other operas under rehearsal is common. Union rules prevent Edwards from hearing his chorus sing individually. The 60 regular singers can be supplemented by up to 30 freelancers for larger operas. Re-auditioning has brought in some energetic young singers.

A question of attitude

Article Abstract:

Opera North presents large works on a limited buget by conceptual staging, sharing production costs with regional counterparts and streamlining. Its 1993 staging of Verdi's Don Carlos follows the composer's last version, with four acts, rather than the first, which had five. The revision, recomposed by Verdi, is closer to the Schiller play on which it was based. It uses a compact single piece set and reduces the chorus contribution.
