The sincerest form of flattery

Article Abstract:

Many American films have been influenced by the French New Wave, which featured hand-held cameras, jump cuts and voice-overs. The 1950's nouvelle vague directors such as Jean-Luc Goddard, Francois Truffaut and Jacques Rivette did not work in America but their style was admired and followed in Hollywood. Films such as 'Bonnie and Clyde' and 'Desperately Seeking Susan' tried to emulate nouvelle vague. A Channel 4 television documentary on Jun 18 1992, 'Cinema! Cinema!', introduces a nouvelle vague season with interviews and explanations of technique.
