The plants that come in from the cold

Article Abstract:

There are a number of garden plants which need special treatment if they are to survive in parts of the UK where winters can be very cold. To save dahlias for the next year, for example, it is necessary to lift the tubers, dry them off and store them in wooden apple boxes lined with newspaper. Perennial tropaeolums will also not survive a cold winter, and their tubers need to be lifted. For geraniums, it is possible either to overwinter the entire plant in a light porch or conservatory or overwinter cuttings.

Green thoughts in a green shade

Article Abstract:

Foliage is extremely effective in making a garden look rich and verdant. For this reason, it is worth choosing some plants just for their foliage. Plants which offer extremely attractive foliage include the giant fennel, iris, giant cow parsley, selinum and sweet cicely. It is important to achieve variety in foliage, contrasting upright leaves with lacy ones, for example, or plain ones with spotted ones. Before purchasing a plant, consider how it will contribute to the garden outside its flowering period.

Ah, progress at last

Article Abstract:

Plants and flowers can grow rapidly in Apr as spring arrives. Seedlings need to be pricked out, and some are now at a stage where they can go outside in a cold frame. There are still seeds to be planted, and gardeners start to feel that the gardening year has now begun properly, after a quiet period over the winter.
