Psychologist Dr Mika Haritos-Fatouros of the University of Thessalonika discovered that military elite corps training aims to create mindless people who would follow orders unquestioningly. She conducted research from 1977-1992. The Greek Military Police training camp KESA used an oppressive physical regime to destroy the individual. Young people known for obedience to authority were recruited from families who approved of political policies. Those selected required impersonal goals and the ability to control themselves.

People who sell their story to a tabloid newspaper often do so out of deep despair, according to Marion Smith, who was herself in this situation following a brief affair with a local doctor. She was widely condemned by neighbours, and sold her story in order to raise funds to allow her family to move to another location. She felt that the newspaper report debased her relationship with the doctor, and that she had been exploited by the journalists concerned.

There is a widespread belief that young people should not transcend their own experience, according to Jenn Crowell, who wrote her novel 'Necessary Madness' when she was only 17. She does not believe that the novel is the work of a 17-year-old, and it is certainly more interesting and complex than would be expected from a person of that age. She feels that she has always been a writer, and does not regard writing as a way of making sense of her life.
