Shameful, Mr Wardle, and here's why

Article Abstract:

The resignation of government minister Charles Wardle over the issue of the possible abolition of British border controls and the subsequent influx of immigrants has been greeted with anger by most of his colleagues. Even the prime minister has hinted that Wardle's stance will serve only to inflame racism, although he has always said that immigration controls are a vital part of race relations. The issue has highlighted many conflicts on nationalism and xenophobia, particularly against a background of growing Euro-scepticism.

The end of Empire, the beginning of modern Britain

Article Abstract:

It is wrong to view the UK's departure from Hong Kong with great regret. It was right that the UK asserted democratic politics there, but it was also right to give it up. It is important to remember that the values which have been established by the UK in Hong Kong are now growing in significance across the world, while the authoritarianism to which Chinese leaders subscribe is declining in influence. Hong Kong will not be overshadowed by China, and it is possible to foresee a future in which Chinese values will be destroyed.

The rise of do-it-yourself democracy

Article Abstract:

Considerable attention has been given recently to the Labour party's new policy of a stakeholder economy. However, it is not generally known that many stakeholders are already operating at local level in the UK. They are united in the Citizen Organising Foundation, which now covers around 60,000 people. Almost all are working class, are very idealistic and have little interest in national politics. They have only been operating for a few years, but have already had a considerable impact at local level.
