The business of dying

Funeral directors are still responsible for arranging the vast majority of funerals in the UK. They offer high standards of service, but the funeral does not reflect the deceased's personality or his or her wishes. Many people feel that they would like to have a more personalised funeral, but few actually make arrangements to ensure that this happens. However, there are now moves towards modernising the funeral industry. This is reflected in the establishment of the UK's first funerary supermarket, where there is a relaxed atmosphere and prices for coffins and similar equipment are lower than those charged by funeral directors.

Article Abstract:

A court martial has found that Lt Col Keith Pople, a leading Army officer, was not guilty of scandalous conduct in his affair with Lt Cdr Karen Pearce, one of the most senior women in the Navy. He admitted to having had an affair with Pearce, and was accused of conduct detrimental to good order and military discipline. The court martial accepted evidence from Admiral Sir Jock Slater, First Sea Lord, for whom Pople and Pearce worked while they were having an affair, that Pople was not Pearce's superior officer even though he had a higher rank.
