The Tories turn their weapons on themselves

Article Abstract:

The decision by the UK's Conservative government to exempt low-calibre weapons held in shooting clubs from its ban on handguns has left it in danger of facing parliamentary revolt. It is even possible that the government may be defeated by those who seek a full ban on handguns. The government was probably mistaken in not permitting a free vote on the issue, and even if it is not defeated, it will not really have gained the upper hand in the debate on handguns.

Fear of Germany drives the Goldsmith gang

Article Abstract:

There was a strong anti-German sentiment at the conference held recently by Sir James Goldsmith's Referendum Party. Many speakers implied that Germany was planning to dominate Europe once again, and were critical of France for being weak enough to go along with German ambitions. This approach highlights the contradictions in UK attitudes to Germany, especially on the right of the political spectrum.
