The Government's hidden cut in pensions

Article Abstract:

The UK government is to reduce the Dept of Social Security rebate paid into a private pension scheme for members of group money-purchase pensions to a value of 2.2% of earnings, from 3.1%. This will mean that members of these schemes lose an average of 172 pounds sterling a year. At the same time, holders of personal pensions will now receive considerably larger rebates if they opt out of the state earnings-related pension scheme. This move has prompted considerable concern among pensions expects.

Article Abstract:

The UK Inland Revenue has been running a high-profile publicity campaign to encourage taxpayers to return their self-assessment forms by the deadline of Sep 30, 1997. However, many taxpayers still have not done so. This could be partly because Inland Revenue officials are perceived by many people as being unhelpful and unsympathetic. Independent Adjudicator Elizabeth Filkin reports that taxpayers still face lengthy and unnecessary investigations.
