Article Abstract:
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICA) and the Institute of Taxation (IoT) cannot agree on responsibility for examinations for tax matters. The IoT has held that role since 1930. Members of IoT are lawyers, direct entrants and accountants. President of IoT Jennifer Ainsworth feels it is in the public interest to have one body setting proficiency and ethical standards. Chairman of the tax faculty of the ICA Peter Wyman states the Institute's wish is to provide for all members' professional needs.

Public sector training authorities use the Confederation of British Industry system Management Charter Initiative (MCI.) The Crediting Competence training scheme allows students to measure themselves against national management standards and to assess their development.Managers' experience counts when they work on projects as part of their job. They produce a portfolio of work which is completed at their own pace and reviewed by approved assessors.

The Centre for Dispute Resolution (CEDR) promotes the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) which saves much court time and legal costs and provides confidentiality. The British legal system is more geared to settlement than that in other countries. CEDR provides a mediator or facilitator to aid speedy results to negotiations.
