Sound the trumpet

Article Abstract:

Music plays a key role in the dramatic flow of Shakespeare's plays, according to Philip Pickett, director of music at the Globe Theatre. Shakespeare used musical elements such as trumpet calls for specific purposes, and it is therefore important to get as close as possible to his original intentions. However, it has proved extremely difficult to find songs and instrumental pieces which may have been used in the original Globe theatre.

Lost in the stars

Medieval composer John Dunstaple is one of the few British composers to have really made an impact abroad. He inspired Binchois and Dufay, and retained a very strong reputation for many years after his death in 1453. He was also a talented astronomer and mathematician, and probably served both as musician and astronomer at the court of John, Duke of Bedford.
