Six hours in the snow to paradise

Article Abstract:

The Klemms are scallop farmers based in the remote Knoydart peninsula of Scotland. Their farming methods are extremely basic though environmentally sound. The couple left secure jobs in Germany to become fish farmers in Knoydart, attempting self-sufficiency in spartan living conditions, harsh weather and with no neighbours nearby. Their two children were educated at home until the age of 12, then sent to boarding school. The couple now smoke their own scallops and sell them, but do not wish to expand or become profit-minded.

All the leading UK tour operators offer a wide range of holidays on the four larger Canary Islands. It is also possible to purchase tailor-made package holidays in more rural hotels and on more remote islands. The best beaches are found on Fuerteventura, with few good beaches being found elsewhere. Visitors who do not wish to spend time on beaches may choose to travel inland, where there is interesting volcanic scenery. The largest and most interesting city on the islands is Las Palmas, on Gran Canaria.

Wanted: gentle owner for a cruel land

Article Abstract:

The remote Knoydart peninsula area in Scotland is for sale. The region has a troubled history and its present owner, Philip Rhodes, is distrusted by the locals. Mr Rhodes claims that the traditional laird's responsibility to the community costs him too much. By selling some of the land he has increased the population of the region and has allowed the public into what was formerly private property. He now wants to sell Knoydart to a conservation group but still keep a stake in the land.
