Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly feasible for ordinary people to buy shares in UK football clubs. A number of league clubs have been listed for some time, while others have been listed on the AIM recently and several more are likely to be listed in 1997. Football clubs already have a reliable source of income in the form of ticket charges, and are set to benefit from high value deals for television coverage. However, they also have high costs in terms of buying new players and maintaining their facilities. This means that it is uncertain whether any particular club will be a profitable investment.

Article Abstract:

The UK has seen 51 separate sales of public sector companies, and all but two of these are currently in profit. However, there has been very mixed performance among privatised companies. In general, the best performance has been seen by the early privatisation issues, such as Associated British Ports and Cable and Wireless. Other companies privatised in the 1980s, such as British Steel and British Gas, have performed less well.

Urge to merge is back with a bang

Article Abstract:

There were 1, 520 merger and acquisition deals worth almost 25 billion pounds sterling by public and private UK companies in 1994, and this level is likely to be exceeded in 1995. International merger deals have also been increasing, reaching a value of $238 billion in 1994. Companies are being encouraged to make acquisition and merger moves by the globalisation of world markets.
