Sales of savoury snacks both by retail and catering have been increasing by 38% since 1993. The market for savoury snacks is divided into the standard, children's and premium adult savoury snacks. Sales of adult savoury snacks rose from 14% in 1994 to 22% in 1997, although sales of standard savoury snacks continue to lead the market. Imported savoury snacks have become more important than savoury snacks produced domestically with Procter and Gamble leading by sourcing Pringles from the USA. An increase of 33% is expected for the market value growth of savoury snacks from 1997 to 2001.

The market for savory pastry products in 1998 was estimated to have reached 443 million pounds sterling. In 1998, pre-packed products accounted for some 388 million sterling, a share equivalent to 88% of the market, with the remainder being accounted for by sales at delicatessen counters. In the pre-packed savory pastry products market, some 90% of sales were accounted for by meat- and poultry-based products, with vegetable-based products responsible for the remaining 10%. In 1998, own-label brands dominated sales in all sectors of the pastry products business.
