Ronald Stevenson: a 70th birthday tribute

Article Abstract:

It can be asserted that composer Ronald Stevenson, who celebrates his 70th birthday in 1998, has paved the way for a large part of the work of today's young composers. The music of Scotland has always been a key theme in his creative career, and this music has also been a driving force behind the lyricism and melodic invention that are typical of his musical language. Early in his career, he was also strongly influenced by European music, unlike many other British composers. His most famous work so far is the 'Passacaglia on DSCH.'

Mingus: the next generation

Article Abstract:

Bass player and bandleader Charles Mingus was extremely courageous and honest, according to Sue Graham Mingus, his widow. She recalls that he always regarded himself as lucky to be able to compose and perform music. Following the premiere in 1989 of her husband's 18-part work 'Epitaph,' which he had failed to complete, she assembled the Mingus Big Band. She is aware that this band should not merely copy Mingus recordings, but honour the creative spirit he encouraged.
