Increasing taxes is not the only way to raise additional funds for the UK National Health Service. It is important to consider other types of compulsory public funding, including social insurance. People must be made more aware of how much their medical treatment actually costs, as this would encourage them to pay more in taxes.

The UK government is wrong to claim that ordinary people are willing to pay higher taxes to fund an improved National Health Service (NHS). It is now time to accept that taxes alone will never be sufficient to fund the NHS. There must be some form of private health care provision too.

Issues concerning the funding of the UK National Health Service are discussed. It is argued that continental Europe, where there is a much larger element of private, non-tax, non-compulsory insurance spending, offers a valuable model for the UK.
