The Camlough Post Office, south Armagh, Ireland, was closed indefinitely in March 1992 after two armed raids in six weeks. Some members of staff were robbed by masked gunmen 12 times. Vans supplying money have also been held up. These robberies are so common they no longer feature in news media. Over 18 million pounds sterling has been stolen in 1,700 raids since 1972. Staff suffer from nerves and some wish to leave. Some post offices are family businesses. Robbers never take the cash from the shop till. Post office staff are instructed not to resist. Police do not investigate speedily because of the risk of ambush.

Northern Ireland has now enjoyed a year of relative peace following the IRA and loyalist ceasefires, and the atmosphere there is generally much more relaxed. Security road-checks are much less common, and Belfast streets have been reopened. However, the Army and the Royal Ulster Constabulary have not significantly reduced manpower levels, and they are still very much aware of the possibility of a sudden return to violence.

The European Court of Human Rights has criticized the legal measures available to the relatives of the eight IRA terrorists who were killed by the SAS in Loughall, Northern Ireland, in 1987. The relatives have received very little information about what actually happened.
