Private profits that fuel public loathing

Article Abstract:

Some UK companies have become extremely unpopular with the general public, even though they are not involved in any obviously sensitive activity, such as manufacturing cigarettes or weapons. They are generally hated because they make huge profits, pay large bonuses to their top employees, make large numbers of people redundant or issue meaningless mission statements. These companies seem vast and inhuman, and ordinary people tend to treat them as if they were particularly unpleasant people.

The creator of our private universe

Article Abstract:

Andreas Pavel, who patented a version of the personal stereo in 1977, saw Sony launch the Walkman in 1979, and claims that the company stole his idea. Sony is still producing more than 1 million Walkmans every month, and has earned large sums of money from the product. Pavel is now fighting a legal battle to obtain a share of this, but judges do not appear to sympathise with his stance.

Artist vs critic: a play without direction

Article Abstract:

The conflict between artists and critics, which has raged for many generations, has always been an uneven fight. The only response available to the artist is to portray the critic in an unflattering way on the stage.
