Possibly a saviour, but surely no saint

Article Abstract:

Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, who won Nigeria's 1993 general election, could soon be released from jail if he renounces this victory. He has shown great resolve during his time in jail, despite physical difficulties, and may still regard himself as saviour of his country. He devoted himself to acquiring wealth, but also made the difficult decision to aim for a higher goal. It is uncertain whether he was merely interested in political power, or whether he genuinely wished to change Nigeria for the better.

Ex-president's sex trial grips Zimbabwe

Article Abstract:

Former Zimbabwean Prime Minister Canaan Banana is standing trial on 11 charges of sodomy, attempted sodomy and indecent assault. Allegations have been made against Banana by Jefta Dube, who offered the fact that he had been taunted and called 'Banana's wife' as a mitigating circumstance in his trial for the murder of a fellow policeman, and by former members of Banana's football team. Banana has strongly denied all suggestions that he is homosexual.

A way out of the apocalypse

Article Abstract:

The lack of government in Somalia makes it easier for humanitarian relief to proceed. The UN should organise an administration based on the clan elders who traditionally hold authority in Somalia. Clan elders would distribute food more widely than gunmen would. A federal structure could be formed through the interaction of various clan groups.
