There has been increasing tension in Hebron, West Bank, since the al-Aqsa intifada a year ago. Militant Jewish settlers live in highly fortified groups, while vigilante settler patrols target Palestinians in nearby areas. There seems little hope of the latest ceasefire being enforced.

Israeli tanks advance on fringes of Bethlehem

There have been casualties on both sides as Israeli troops clashed with Palestinian paramilitaries on the outskirts of Bethlehem, West Bank. This was the largest Israeli invasion of Palestinian controlled territory since the beginning of the intifada in Sep 2000.

Two Israelis were killed in Afula, Israel, when Palestinian guerrillas opened fire at the town's central bus station. Responsibility was claimed by the Islamic Jihad group and the Al-Aqsa Brigades.
