Article Abstract:
Singer-songwriter Mark Eitzel of AMC is aware that his music is often regarded as very depressing. This element is not immediately apparent on 'West,' the album which he has written, produced and recorded with REM guitarist Peter Buck. The two men found that they had very similar approaches to songwriting, and Buck welcomed the fact that working with Eitzel allowed him to be more spontaneous than is generally the case with REM. Eitzel was able to simply react to Buck's playing, and this allowed him to draw on many associative memories in his lyrics.

Melody is extremely important, according to Justin Webb, son of songwriter Jimmy Webb. He has linked with his brother Christiaan to form The Webb Brothers, and they are shortly to release their debut album, 'Beyond The Biosphere.' He feels that working from melodies makes it possible to create very strong foundations for songs. He and Christiaan have received harsh advice from their father, but they feel that this stems from his genuine concern for them.
