Now, and at the hour of their end

Article Abstract:

In the late 15th century the bestselling books were the hand-produced 'Books of Hours' displayed in an exhibition entitled 'Splendours of Flanders' at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England, until Sep 19, 1993. These ornate prayer books came in all sizes and de luxe editions were available for the rich. The prayers were arranged according to the Canonical hours of the day. They were based on the Church's liturgy but included secular imagery. Flemish artist Simon Bening, 1483-1561, is one of few about whom there is much information.

Daniel Wildenstein, a billionaire art dealer with galleries in London, New York and Tokyo, has been compiling the definitive catalogue of Monet since 1937. The first volume of the catalogue took 20 years to complete. Volume five, the last, was published in Jun 1992. The whole catalogue lists about 2,000 paintings chronologically and includes photographs, letters and drawings. Wildenstein worked from photographs wherever possible and traced the originals from them. About 300 works have not been found.
