No prizes for peace as Nobel judges fall out over literature shortlist

Article Abstract:

The run-up to the decision on the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature has been marred by the fact that three of the members of the Swedish Academy committee responsible for making the decision have chosen not to participate. Particular controversy surrounds Swedish Academy Permanent Secretary Sture Allen, who has been accused of not reading the books nominated for the award and of lack of vision. It is very difficult to predict which author will be selected for the award, as the committee brings together people of very differing views.

Miracle fails for deprived Ossies

Article Abstract:

Some parts of the former East Germany now appear to be very affluent, with many residents having reaped the benefits of a shift to a market economy. However, other residents of the region feel that they have not gained at all from the collapse of Communism. They are bitter because many foreigners have taken up employment there, and this has prompted high levels of emigration. Among those who remain in the former East Germany, the birth rate is falling dramatically.

Germans invade Poland for food

Article Abstract:

Germans travel from Frankfurt an der Oder into Poland to buy food and clothing cheaply. The cost of living is lower in Poland, and economic growth is strong, while it is stagnant in eastern Germany. There is no longer an industry in Frankfurt, once an industrial town. Frankfurt inhabitants see themselves as having to compete against western Germany and against Poland, and there are criticisms of the manner in which german reunification was carried out.
