Morris West

Article Abstract:

Novelist Morris West joined the Christian Brothers Order in Sydney, Australia, in 1933 at the age of 17. He left in 1939 before taking his final vows, and joined the Australian Imperial Forces, serving as a lieutenant. He subsequently wrote and produced radio programmes before setting up his own radio company. His novel 'Gallows in the Sand,' published in 1955, was not very successful, but 'Kundu,' published in 1956, raised enough money to allow him to travel to Europe, where he wrote his first book about religion.

The US film industry has begun to acknowledge that international success if vital if a film is to be really profitable. There is therefore increasing emphasis on foreign sales and video, satellite and terrestrial television sales. This has meant that actors such as Sylvester Stallone, who is not particularly popular in the US, have gained extensive support in very unlikely countries.

Crime writer Michael Dibdin wrote from a suburb of Oxford for several years, but has now gone to live in the US, where he has gained new inspiration. His latest novel, 'Dark Sceptre,' is set in Seattle, which he regards as having been less exploited than other large US cities. He still returns to the UK regularly, but now sees himself as a permanent expatriate.
