Major in mental health rethink

Article Abstract:

John Major, UK Prime Minister, has requested an investigation into whether mental health authorities ought to be set up to supervise expenditure relating to people suffering from mental illness, because he realises that too many residential places might have been scrapped. Major is also aware that that public is becoming increasingly afraid of people with mental problems. The Prime Minister's interest results from cases of murder committed by ex-mental patients and a report from the Royal College of Physicians which shows that all beds for mental patients are full.

Political star who faces the threat of a fall

Article Abstract:

Bryan Gould, candidate for the leadership of the Labour Party, but unlikely to win according to an 'On the Record' survey, believes the party needs a good debate if it is to win a future general election. He holds Keynesian views and thinks Labour should have analysed previous policies. He believes the union link should be kept but with party members having the majority of votes, not a 50/50 split, because the members views must be seen to matter.

Towering generation of MPs departs the political stage

Article Abstract:

About 80 MPs (Members of Parliament) are retiring or not standing again, removing much of the heart of the Thatcher governments. A political generation will have passed. Michael Foot, 78, a great orator, is retiring. Most are going voluntarily, including minister Alan Clark, some back-benchers and 10 Thatcher cabinet members.
