Madam makes a move

Article Abstract:

Sonia Gandhi, widow of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, has been very reclusive since the murder of her husband in 1991. However, she has now decided to return to public life. She has joined the Congress Party, which is currently in a very weak position, and her decision is expected to considerably revive the party's fortunes. The Congress Party imposes strict conditions on its members, but may be prepared to waive these in order to benefit from her support. Some observers are rather cynical about her decision to become actively involved in politics.

A citizens' charter to save our cities

Article Abstract:

There is a growing sense of powerlessness at the heart of the UK's cities, and this in turn is bringing poverty, violence and demoralisation. The social networks which have traditionally united communities are breaking down, and individuals are now becoming increasingly isolated. It is vital to act against this trend by finding practical ways of building social capital. One approach which is proving successful is 'broad-based organising,' which seeks to organise people in new ways to deal with the structural causes of civic decline.

Building cities to move the spirit

Article Abstract:

Modern cities face many ecological and social problems, but they could have a positive future as long as the principles of sustainable development are followed. The main task is to achieve a dynamic balance between society, cities and nature, ensuring that citizens are fully involved in the problems of their environment. Achitecture centres should be built, allowing interaction between planning committees and the general public.
