MacLaurin bows out at Tesco with record profit

Article Abstract:

Supermarket chain Tesco achieved a 10% increase in pre-tax profit in the year to Feb 22 1997 from the previous year to 750 million pounds sterling. Like-for-like sales rose by 7.5%, and Tesco remains the UK's leading supermarket chain. It is to open eight superstores in 1997, along with 12 compact stores and four city centre Metro stores. It has postponed plans to the extension of the Tesco Express petrol station and convenience store chain. It is to see the retirement of chairman Lord MacLaurin in Jun 1997.

Will the tobacco trade go up in smoke?

Article Abstract:

The recent case of Grady Carter, a lung cancer victim who has received 500,000 pounds sterling from Brown and Williamson, a US division of tobacco concern BAT, has already served to severely damage tobacco shares. It could prompt a large amount of other cases, which would in turn further push down the share values of tobacco companies. This comes at a time when the industry is already battling against negative publicity.
