Many companies, their boards and investors are beginning to place increasing emphasis on the private life of senior executives as a factor influencing business performance. This is because financial market developments are often determined by psychological perceptions of what may or may not affect a company's future performance. This has been seen most recently in the case of Rupert Murdoch, owner of News Corp, who has separated from his wife. Shares in the company began to fall very shortly after the announcement of the separation was made.

The Independent Television Commission and the BBC Charter forbid the supply of products to television production staff for money but free product placement in television programmes advertises branded goods. Product placement specialists are employed by big companies such as ICL, Honda, Toyota and BT. Some firms instruct their advertising agencies to develop placements. Critics believe this is harmful as viewers receive a subliminal message. Placement companies feel it helps create better programmes and complements suppliers' marketing.

All ears for radio?

Article Abstract:

The commercial radio sector in the UK is set to see further expansion if the Radio Authority, as is widely expected, makes a fourth national radio licence available. The fourth service will have to be distinctly different from existing national commercial radio stations, and will have to show that it will benefit independent radio as a whole. A period of cross-industry consultation will begin in mid-Jan 1997, with comments being invited from all interested parties.
