Article Abstract:
A report commissioned by the UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food indicates that there is no way of guaranteeing that foods now sold as being free of contamination by genetically modified (GM) crops could remain totally uncontaminated. The report concludes that existing 'safe' planting distances should be increased if the organic farming industry is to retain its GM-free certification. There is now considerable confusion surrounding the government's policy on GM foods.

Article Abstract:
A report published by the UK governent's Urban Task Force contains more than 100 recommendations for urban revival and protecting the countryside from uncontrolled development. The recommendations include tax reliefs for residents of run-down urban areas and stricter powers for local councils to take control of redundant buildings. The task force has decided not to recommend a direct greenfield tax on house building, choosing instead to use the planning system to control the activities of developers.
