Article Abstract:

Spending time away from the piano can be very valuable, according to pianist Murray Perahia. He was forced to stop playing for some time because of problems with his right thumb, but has now been able to start playing again. He gained consolation from Bach's music when he was unwell, and is now planning to record this composer's 'English Suites.' He has been very influenced by Austro-Jewish music theorist Heinrich Schenker in his views on musical language and structure, and regards structure as one of the key elements of music.

The best pieces of piano music highlight the piano's possibilities as a colourist instrument, according to Canadian pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin. This approach has brought him widespread popularity, even among fellow pianists. He uses his own judgement when interpreting pieces, but does not try consciously to impose his own ideas. His main aim is to locate the spirit of the music through the notes.

Music is an integral part of life, according to Portuguese pianist Maria Joao Pires. She is very keen to introduce children to the excitement of playing music, and owns a remote farmhouse in Portugal where tuition is offered to a small community of children. Her approach to performances is characterised by a great simplicity, although she also has remarkable powers of concentration.
