Let's keep our eyes on the Swedes

Article Abstract:

The way in which the Swedish government copes with the problems now facing the country's welfare state could provide valuable lessons for governments elsewhere in Europe. The Swedish welfare system faces very similar problems to those of other European countries, but the Swedes are in a particularly strong position to cope, enjoying high standards of education and a strong social network. It is likely that the country's highly developed banks and insurance companies will look at ways of supplementing the state welfare system.

We're crying too much over spilt oil

Article Abstract:

Extensive media coverage of the recent oil spill from the tanker Sea Empress, which is only really a short-term problem, should not allow attention to be diverted from the longer-term problem of the continued use of fossil fuels. It is important to seriously consider the environmental implications of continuing to rely on oil. Fossil fuels are likely to continue to provide 90% of the world's energy in the foreseeable future, while the share held by nuclear and hydro power will actually decline.

Big is no longer beautiful

Article Abstract:

A number of key trends are prompting a move away from very large companies and towards medium-sized ones. Globalism tends to put pressure on companies to become larger, but new technology allows them to have a presence in many different countries but reduce the unit size of each operation. All large companies are now reducing the size of their workforce, and the trend towards outsourcing is creating opportunities for small and medium-sized concerns.
