JFK's trouble with George

Article Abstract:

There are signs of serious problems at George, the glossy political magazine launched in 1995 by John F. Kennedy Jr. He has always found it very hard to live up to his father's reputation, and felt that this magazine would be a project with which he could gain success in his own right. However, George has proved to be simply another magazine reflecting the widespread obsession with models and film stars in the US. Indeed, Kennedy admits that certain features are used simply to attract readers.

Inside New York's sweatshops

Article Abstract:

Many old marine warehouses in the Brooklyn region of New York contain illegal factories where poorly paid workers, who are often very young, produce garments for leading fashion houses. These sweatshops are frequently raided by the New York State deparment of labour, and many fines have been levied for violations of the child labour laws. However, these raids often do not deter either the employers or the employees.

Stay home or you're busted

Article Abstract:

New Orleans is now operating a curfew for children under 17, prohibiting them from being out on the streets between sundown and 6 am. It has been in force for 10 months, and during this time 3,514 juveniles have been detained. The juvenile crime rate has fallen by 42%, and overall crime is down by 31%. However, some observers have criticised the curfew, seeing it as going against civil liberties.
