Article Abstract:

The premiere of Dominic Muldowney's multi-track violin concerto takes place at the Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool on March 17, 1992. After 15 minutes the Royal Philharmonic divides into two and Libor Pesek, the orchestra's music director, and Dominic Muldowney conduct at different speeds. They use radio earpieces; the beats rarely coincide and the solo line moves from one ensemble beat to the other. The cross-tempi involve 133.5 beats per minute in one orchestra and 144 in the other. They create interference patterns which should produce the aural illusion of a third rhythm. The musical ear cannot focus on more than one line at a time. Aural scanning, switching attention continually between lines, can be developed.

Article Abstract:

Oliver Knussen had to rebuild his career when he was only in his twenties and suffered from blocks and missing deadlines until after 'Higglety Pigglety Pop', his second opera. Programme planners and organisations frequently consult him for his musical knowledge and expertise. In the 1980's he became director of the Aldeburth and Tanglewood Festivals. After the 1992 Aldeburgh Festival he will direct a composers' and performers' summer school. He uses earnings from conducting to finance his composing and to present new composers.

Article Abstract:

The naturalist Gilbert White of Selborne, Hampshire, England, author of 'The Natural History of Selborne,' measured the length of echoes by shouting Latin verses, but did not connect them with musical origins. Echoes produce rounds. Music imitates echoes by passing music between two or more groups. This was first systematically developed in the 16th century. Madrigal composers in the 1680s repeated a texture or phrase at lower volume as in the Baroque. Echoes in Baroque music are associated with pathos or remoteness.
