Article Abstract:

Freedom of the press is a key element in protecting UK citizens from uncontrolled state or private power. Against this background, journalists have the right to undertake investigations and to challenge people. However, it has become increasingly common for journalism to stray beyond investigation and to become vindictive and invasive. In the case of some tabloid newspapers, journalists simply expose people for the sake of doing so, rather than for any legitimate reasons.

Public services use new managerial techniques to provide more efficient services for lower costs. The housing department in Braintree, Essex, England has devolved its management. Kent police have removed one level of management. New Zealand and the US have reformed national government. The Rt Hon William Waldegrave has the task of reforming UK central government, which is introducing self-managed agencies. Their independence makes them more flexible.

Don't relinquish your seats too easily

Article Abstract:

Many centre-left Conservatives have still failed to grasp the fact that their views are falling from popularity and that they have a bleak political future. The more right-wing elements of the party are now starting to dominate, and this trend looks set to expand. The Labour party is starting to look like a party of government, and in contrast the Conservative party is beginning to look like a party in opposition.
