Article Abstract:
The 1990 riots at Strangeways prison brought impetus for new initiatives, one of them being the Strangeways Open Learning Option (SOLO). Lord Justice Woolf recommended that education would benefit the prisoners more than being subdued by drugs, and SOLO was born with cooperation from the local education authority. This scheme is of particular benefit to prisoners who are isolated in the Vulnerable Prisoners Unit under Rule 43 segregation for sex offenders, and prisoners who are on remand and face months of waiting before sentencing.

Article Abstract:
Journalists have given a great deal of attention to links between the UK government and political activists, particularly to claims by some activists that they were able to engineer access to certain key government members. In fact, this issue has been blown up out of all proportion. However, it is a cause for concern in that it highlights the ethical poverty of some people who were until very recently on the reforming left of the Labour party. It is now time to ensure that pluralism is firmly established in UK politics.

Article Abstract:
The UK's teachers initially had high expectations of the Labour government elected in May 1997. However, education ministers have so far shown a negative attitude towards teachers. They have called on teachers to raise their expectations of pupils, but have shown low expectations of teachers themselves. The teaching profession was demoralized before the Labour party came to power, and this situation has been made worse by the fact that government ministers continue to use negative rhetoric.
