Here's to an old-fashioned look at the Bar

Article Abstract:

Barristers must now be driven by commercial considerations, putting their professional reputation before anything else, according to John Mortimer, author of the extremely popular series of books about the barrister Rumpole. This character does not follow this trend, and is often found defending those who would otherwise go undefended. Mortimer himself received a great deal of attention in the 1980s, when he was involved in a number of high profile books and screenplays, but has now faded into the background, partly because of his disappointment with recent political developments.

Indeed, a situation is fast developing where most women no longer want to join these clubs anyway, as they find the environment too alien.
