Hello, Daddy, it's great to see you

Article Abstract:

Employers' expectations mean fathers have little time to spend with their children. In the 1980s men worked the longest hours in the EC. Over half the mothers in Nottingham University study would not leave their children with their partner because they do not believe them capable. This prevents fathers from gaining skills through experience. When a father does share childcare he meets strange social attitudes. European Childcare Network co-ordinator, Peter Moss seeks work and family harmonisation. The EC has a draft proposal recommending increased participation by men in parental responsibility.

Finding our way back to the family

Article Abstract:

The family is the most important social institution, being the best way possible of nuturing future generations and teaching children the skills and language of relationship. It is vital to the future of civilisation, as it ensures that the values of one generation are passed on to the next. In many western countries, family values are collapsing, with many children being born outside marriage and many families breaking up. This trend must be reversed as soon as possible, as the pressures of the rapid changes of modern life mean that children need a stable family background more than ever.

So what's the big idea, Mr Etzioni?

Article Abstract:

Amitai Etzioni, professor of sociology at George Washington University, founded the concept of communitarianism. He believes that it is now time for a new sense of mutual responsibilities, founding a moral society on stable, happy families.
