Article Abstract:

US novelist/composer Paul Bowles is among only a few novelists who have also shown a talent for composing. He is at least as significant as a writer of music as a writer of stories and novels, and his music and his books are very different. His music is extremely light, while his books tend to portray a dark world and progress very slowly. He was first a composer, and did not being writing novels until 1949, when he had already written most of his 150 compositions.

There have been a considerable number of films featuring jazz musicians. In most cases, these characters have to fulfill a dual role, being both a representative of simple, natural virtues and a symbol of social dissent and urban alienation. In early films involving jazz music, there are many undignified compromises, particularly when the musicians are black. The real jazz presence is most clearly seen in documentary films.

Playing with the Ornette Coleman Quartet in the late 1950s and early 1960s had a great influence on bass player Charlie Haden, who had come from a rural background and had until then had had little experience of urban life and latest musical trends. He became the best bass player of his generation, and has featured on many key jazz albums. He is particularly noted for mixing found recordings with his own original themes.
