'Hair': the politically correct rewrite
Article Abstract:
Jim Rado, co-writer of the hippie musical 'Hair' which was on Broadway in 1968, is rewriting it for a West End, London, England, revival in Sep 1993, changing the lyrics to mention soft drugs. 'Hair' included drug songs, nudity and the philosophy of free love. However, Jim had never done drugs. The co-writers were Galt McDermot and Jim's close friend Gerome Ragni who died of cancer in 1991. Jim and Ragni wrote a lot of other music including an environmental musical called 'Sun,' but none achieved the success of 'Hair.'

It is now possible to focus on the future, according to Royal Opera and Royal Ballet Executive Director Michael Kaiser, who warmly welcomes the fact that the Arts Council has increased the grant for the Royal Opera House to 20 million pounds sterling. He feels that it is now necessary to change people's expectations of the Royal Opera House, rebuilding the trust of ordinary people, the government and sponsors. He wishes to make the Royal Opera House more accessible, and is committed to reducing seat prices.

Perverse pride of underclass carries echoes of Orwell
Article Abstract:
Homeless people in London prefer sleeping rough and do not like hostels' rules. They obtain more food and money in 1993 than in 1933 when George Orwell wrote his book 'Down and Out in Paris and London.' Money comes from handouts and selling The Big Issue magazine about the homeless but some will not draw their benefits on principle. There are more women sleeping on the streets. The homeless have their own social customs and community spirit.
