Georgy Sviridov

Article Abstract:

Pianist and composer Georgy Sviridov attended the Children's Music School in Kursk, Russia, and then studied under Mikhail Yudin at the Central Music College in Leningrad, Russia, between 1932 and 1936. He studied composition at the Leningrad Conservatory with Dmitry Shostakovich, and this was to have a very significant impact on his own music. His early works include piano concertos composed in 1936 and 1942 and a piano sonata composed in 1944. His orchestral catalogue contains some very attractive works, including the 1964 piece 'Music for Chamber Orchestra.'

Wilfred Josephs

Article Abstract:

Composer Wilfred Josephs showed interest in music from an early age. However, he was not assertive enough to express a wish to study and write music. He qualified as a dentist, and served in the Royal Army Dental Corps during his National Service. He became a part-time composition student under Alfred Nieman at the Guildhall School of Music in London, England, and his first major piece of music was inspired by the slow, painful death of his father. He began to undertake performances at the Society for the Promotion of New Music in the mid- to late-1950s.

Composer Sir Michael Tippett, who died in early Jan 1998, was greatly respected by musicians and audiences. He planned his large-scale projects extremely carefully, but could also be consumed by the act of composition. His scores often show the problems he had with notating his music in ways that indicated what he wanted or made the music easier to perform. He took care not to become totally immersed in music, and was very interested in what was going on in the wider world.
