Cellist Beatrice Harrison was born in 1892. She was devoted to the cello and could not resist playing. She and her three sisters were all musical and their parents made them spend hours practising. Their mother Annie went on foreign tours with them, organising everything. When she died in 1934 Beatrice's career began to diminish. She inspired the composers Delius, John Ireland and Bax. Her live broadcasts from her garden at Limpsfield, Surrey, England are famous because of the duetting nightingales.

Putting the cats out for the night

Article Abstract:

Benjamin Britten's opera 'Peter Grimes' has been extremely successful, but those involved in the very first performance, at Sadler's Wells Theatre in 1945, were not at all sure how it would be received. Even Britten himself feared that it would be a disaster, and most of the cast would have preferred to stage a more traditional opera to mark the re-opening of the theatre after the second world war. In fact, the opening performance went very well.

Trevor Green, BBC Head of Music in Manchester, England, is promoting the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra with concerts in the UK and abroad, commercial recordings and photo-imaging. This is partly to offset any future threats to the orchestra's existence. Income from concerts is a basic part of funding, although not sufficient to give total independence. The orchestra is also involved in community and educational projects.
