EU's jobless unlikely to get on their bikes

Article Abstract:

European Union member states agree that it will be necessary to harmonise unemployment levels before European monetary union can be introduced. If this does not happen, unemployment levels in poorer countries will rise as monetary union makes it impossible for them to maintain competitiveness by adjusting exchange rates. However, many economists and sociologists doubt that there will be large-scale movements of workers between countries, and believe that Euro-sceptics are simply playing on these fears in order to gain support for their position.

Holy man points way for Israel's coalition

Article Abstract:

Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef is a Sephardi ultra-orthodox rabbi in Israel who forged an independent following after years of discrimination by the Ashkenazi. He founded his own political party, Shas. The party gained 200,000 votes in the last election, not all from religious followers. Rabbi Yosef ruled that Jewish law would permit the return of Israel's biblical lands in exchange for a peace treaty if it would save Jewish lives. Ashkenazi orthodox parties attack Shas because of its increasing power.

Sex row menaces Belgian coalition

Article Abstract:

Belgian's coalition government, headed by Jean-Luc Dehaene, was badly affected by the Marc Dutroux child-sex murders, which led to charges of government incompetence. The government is being placed in an even more precarious position by a new scandal involving deputy prime minister Elio di Rupo, who is claimed to have had sex with young boys. He is now the subject of a commission of inquiry, and may be forced to resign, thus destabilising the coalition.
