Choking on the very air we breathe

Article Abstract:

It is widely accepted that the UK has a serious air pollution problem when certain weather conditions prevail, but the government has still failed to taken any decisive action to deal with it. Information about air quality is now available to the general public very quickly, but this does not seem to be encouraging people to take action, by using their cars less often, for example. Friends of the Earth believes that the government should now introduce strict measures to limit road traffic when it is likely that a smog will develop.

How we can clear the air

Article Abstract:

There have been mixed reactions to the recent launch of the UK Air Quality Strategy. Some observers feel that this is an innovative approach, as it sets standards for the maximum level of each main pollutant which should be seen as acceptable. It is also positive in that it combines international and local action. In contrast, others feel that it is too cautious and that it reflects the great unwillingness of the government to take firm action against motorists.

Ten ways to breathe easier

Article Abstract:

The quality of air in the UK's cities is certainly better than it was in the days before the Clean Air Act, but it could still be greatly improved. Measures could include encouraging people to cycle rather than use their car for short journies by building more cycle paths, encouraging car sharing, discouraging companies from issuing company cars and removing older cars from the road by offering incentives for people to trade them in.
