Article Abstract:
China was involved in a systematic espionage programme for more than 20 years to obtain highly secret information about all seven nuclear warheads in the US ballistic missile arsenal, according to the Cox report. This report indicates that China could start testing the first of its advanced nuclear weapons as early as 1999, with deployment beginning as early as 2002. It states that China did not only use espionage to obtain US technology, and highlights problems including inadequate security at the Chinese launch sites for US satellites.

Article Abstract:
Descendants of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the US, have for most of the 20th century met each May at Monticello, above Charlottesville, VA. They were joined in May 1999 for the first time by around 50 descendants of Sally Hemings, the black slave woman by whom Jefferson is believed to have fathered children. The two groups posed together for the media, but behind the scenes there was considerable tension between them. It is not clear whether the descendants of Hemings will be allowed to join the Monticello Association.

Article Abstract:
Those who run small businesses in China must face up to many challenges. In certain cases, large, government-controlled concerns object to what a small business is doing and take forceful action to bring about the closure of that business. This was the case with brothers Chen Zhui and Chen Yan, who came into conflict with China Telecom after they set up a Internet international telephone service. In other cases, small business premises are demolished without compensation to make way for redevelopment schemes.
