Can Mandela halt the flight of the whites?

Article Abstract:

There is a growing realisation among South African politicians that wide-reaching efforts must be made to halt the flow of white professionals out of the country. Almost 8,000 white people emigrated from South Africa in the first nine months of 1996, and immigration levels are still not sufficient to balance out the loss of skilled workers and professionals. Furthermore, many whites who remain in South Africa have become disillusioned with the political process. For this reason, the political parties are now attempting to cooperate more fully with each other.

Whites hit back over 'dishonest' ANC attack

Article Abstract:

Parties representing South African whites have reacted strongly to President Nelson Mandela's attack on whites in his last speech as ANC party leader. Democratic Party leader Tony Leon has dismissed Mandela's stance as incorrectly analyzing the political and economic situation in South Africa. The National Party has stated that Mandela portrayed himself as unstatesmanlike. In contrast, his speech was warmly received by ANC members, who feel that Mandela has previously gone too far in accommodating the wishes of whites.

Mandela attacks white privilege and free press

Article Abstract:

South African President Nelson Mandela was extremely critical of developments in society and politics in his last speech as leader of the African National Congress (ANC). He claimed that the ANC is being hampered by those who are determined to maintain white privilege, and expressed the view that white society is hostile to the new democratic South Africa. He attributed many of South Africa's social problems, including crime and the slow pace of social change, to white resistance.
