Britain must join the game

Article Abstract:

Certain problems are emerging which may make it difficult to adhere to the timetable for monetary union set down in the Maastricht treaty. However, UK Eurosceptics should not assume that the monetary union process has been severely damaged. The UK should not gloat over possible clashes between France and Germany over monetary union, but should instead recognise that it can still play an important role in ensuring that some type of monetary union is established early in the 21st century.

Traumatised by the new reality

Article Abstract:

France is facing a range of social, economic and political problems. These are mainly the result of its failure to adapt to the reunification of Germany and the ending of the rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union. France still likes to believe that it can act as a very powerful nation, having strong international influence. It must now accept that this cannot be the case and that it is likely to experience severe economic difficulties in the short term.

Blood pact that must end in gore

Article Abstract:

There will be considerable political difficulties in a number of European countries, especially France and Germany, if the timetable for economic and monetary union (EMU) agreed at Maastricht proves unworkable. These countries have showed very strong commitment to EMU, so would be greatly damaged if they were seen to be going back on this commitment. It is now becoming clearer that it will not be possible to implement EMU by 1999, as originally planned.
