Article Abstract:
UK tour operators are relying on the strength of the pound sterling against the US dollar to stimulate the holiday industry. Over-capacity has resulted in poor bookings. Tour operators aimed to sell 9 million holidays in 1992; figures will unlikely reach 7.5 million. Low prices has led to a price war which has forced many companies into bankruptcy. 1991 International Passenger Survey figures show that the number of package holidays has decreased by 7% to 10.6 million whilst independent travel is more popular at 13.9 million.
