Article Abstract:
There has been extensive media coverage of the impact of alcoholism on Russian President Boris Yeltsin and footballer Paul Gascoigne. Most of this coverage has been mocking and patronizing, ignoring the fact that both men have fallen victim to a disease that can be fatal. Article Abstract:
Poet, short-story writer and essayist Raymond Carver, who died in 1988, was one of the leading figures in contemporary American literature. His life was deeply affected by alcoholism, and his short fiction and poems offer some of the best writing anywhere about this disease. His writing is very direct, but does not assail the reader in a negative way. Towards the end of his life, he found a sense of inner peace, but did not forget the world in which he had been living earlier.
