The financial impact of the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the UK is considered. It is argued that rural areas must look at ways of improving their situation themselves, rather than looking to the government for help.

The prospects for agriculture in the UK after the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease is eliminated are discussed. It is suggested that some land will revert to woodland or wilderness as older farmers retire.
